# Configure Assessments and Grading Scales in Edustream

> Set up your CA/Exam score split, configure grade scales, enter student scores, and let Edustream compute totals, grades, and class positions automatically.

Edustream's assessments and grading module takes the manual effort out of calculating results. You define how scores are weighted, set your school's grade boundaries once, and then let teachers enter raw scores — the system handles every computation from there, including totals, letter grades, subject positions, and class averages.

<Note>
  Assessments & Grading is available on the **Core** plan and above. See [Plans & Pricing](/getting-started/plans-and-pricing) for a full feature comparison.
</Note>

## Setting Up the CA / Exam Score Split

Before any scores are entered, you need to tell Edustream how assessments are divided for each term. The most common split is **40% Continuous Assessment (CA)** and **60% Examination**, but your school can use any combination that adds up to 100%.

### Configure the Assessment Split

<Steps>
  <Step title="Go to Assessment Settings">
    Navigate to **Academics → Assessments → Settings** and select the relevant **Academic Year** and **Term**.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Set CA and Exam Weights">
    Enter the percentage weight for CA and for the Examination. For example, enter **40** for CA and **60** for Exam. The two values must sum to 100 — Edustream validates this before saving.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Apply to Classes">
    Choose whether this split applies to all classes school-wide or only to selected class levels. Some schools use a different weighting for exam classes (e.g., SS 3).
  </Step>

  <Step title="Save the Configuration">
    Click **Save Settings**. The score entry sheets for all subjects will immediately reflect the CA and Exam columns with the correct maximum values.
  </Step>
</Steps>

<Note>
  The assessment split is configured per term. If your school changes the weighting in a later term, update the setting at the start of that term before teachers begin entering scores.

## Configuring the Grade Scale

The grade scale maps a student's total percentage score to a letter grade, a descriptive remark, and a grade point. Edustream supports fully customizable grade boundaries so you can match your school's official grading policy exactly.

### Set Up Grade Levels

<Steps>
  <Step title="Open Grade Scale Settings">
    Go to **Academics → Assessments → Grade Scale**. You will see a table listing all existing grade levels, or an empty table if none have been configured yet.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Add a Grade Level">
    Click **Add Grade Level** and fill in the following fields:

    * **Letter Grade** — e.g., *A*, *B*, *C*, *D*, or *F*
    * **Minimum Score** — the lowest percentage that earns this grade (e.g., *70*)
    * **Maximum Score** — the highest percentage for this grade (e.g., *100*)
    * **Remark** — the descriptive label shown on report cards (e.g., *Excellent*, *Good*, *Pass*, *Fail*)
    * **Grade Point** — the numeric weight used for GPA calculations (e.g., *5*, *4*, *3*, *2*, *1*)
  </Step>

  <Step title="Repeat for Each Grade">
    Add a row for every grade your school uses. Ensure the score ranges are contiguous — no gaps or overlaps — so every possible score maps to exactly one grade.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Save the Grade Scale">
    Click **Save Grade Scale**. Edustream applies this scale automatically whenever a total score is computed.
  </Step>
</Steps>

<Tip>
  A typical five-level scale might look like: A (70–100, Excellent), B (60–69, Good), C (50–59, Average), D (40–49, Pass), F (0–39, Fail). Adjust the boundaries to match your school's requirements.
</Tip>

## Entering Student Scores

Once the split and grade scale are configured, subject teachers can log in and enter scores directly into their class gradebooks.

### Enter CA and Exam Scores

<Steps>
  <Step title="Open the Gradebook">
    Go to **Academics → Assessments → Gradebook**, then select the **Class**, **Subject**, and **Term**. You will see a list of all students enrolled in that class with blank CA and Exam columns.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Enter CA Scores">
    Click into each cell in the **CA** column and type the student's continuous assessment score. The cell validates the entry against the maximum CA mark configured in your settings.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Enter Exam Scores">
    Repeat the process for the **Exam** column after the examination period.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Save Scores">
    Click **Save Scores**. Edustream immediately computes each student's total score, assigns the appropriate letter grade and remark from your grade scale, and updates the class average and subject position for every student.
  </Step>
</Steps>

<Warning>
  Scores cannot be edited after the term's gradebook is **locked** by an administrator. If you need to make a correction, contact your school administrator to unlock the gradebook for that subject and term.

## Automatic Computations

Edustream performs the following calculations automatically after scores are saved — you do not need to do anything additional.

<CardGroup cols={2}>
  <Card title="Total Score" icon="calculator">
    The weighted total is computed as: *(CA ÷ CA max) × CA weight* + *(Exam ÷ Exam max) × Exam weight*. The result is a score out of 100.
  </Card>

  <Card title="Letter Grade & Remark" icon="star">
    Each student's total score is matched against your configured grade scale to assign the correct letter grade and descriptive remark automatically.
  </Card>

  <Card title="Subject Position" icon="ranking-star">
    Edustream ranks students within the class for each subject based on total score. Tied scores share the same position.
  </Card>

  <Card title="Class Average" icon="chart-bar">
    The class average for each subject is calculated and displayed in the gradebook and on every student's report card.
  </Card>

## Affective Domain (Behavioral Remarks)

The affective domain section captures your teachers' observations about each student's character and conduct — qualities that academic scores alone do not reflect.

### Enter Affective Domain Remarks

<Steps>
  <Step title="Open the Affective Domain Sheet">
    In the Gradebook, select the **Affective Domain** tab for the relevant class and term.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Rate Each Trait">
    For each student, the form teacher rates the following traits using a scale such as *Excellent*, *Good*, *Fair*, or *Poor*:

    * **Punctuality** — arrives to school and class on time
    * **Neatness** — personal hygiene and uniform presentation
    * **Attentiveness** — focuses during lessons
    * **Honesty** — demonstrates integrity
    * **Politeness** — respectful to peers and staff
    * **Teamwork** — collaborates effectively with others

    Your administrator can add custom traits to match your school's character development framework.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Save Remarks">
    Click **Save Affective Domain**. These ratings are pulled directly onto each student's report card in the character assessment section.
  </Step>
</Steps>

<Info>
  Affective domain entries are completed by the student's **form teacher**, not by subject teachers. Only the form teacher's account has write access to this section for their assigned class.
